CHAIR MESSAGE

by Tiffany Sprenkel,

Steering Committee Chair, 2005 - 2006

This year Leadership Redding celebrates twenty years of excellence in the Redding Region, including the past five years as a program of the Shasta Regional Community Foundation.

As a graduate of the Class of 2000, I can attest the Leadership Redding experience is life-changing.  Many of the relationships developed during that year have grown into lifelong personal and professional friendships.  I have also gained a broader perspective about the issues facing our community as a result of my involvement with the program.

Our diverse alumni include city managers, police officers, healthcare providers, non-profit directors, educators and private business owners, as well as citizens who desire to learn more about the community in which they live and work.  Many of these people credit their participation in the Leadership Redding program as instrumental to their community activities and successful careers.

We are continually seeking class members from all sectors of the community.  If you know of someone who is interested in knowledge about and involvement within our region, please let them know about the Leadership Redding program.

 Orientation Session

by Catherine Lathrop-Cummings

Did you feel the difference in the Redding air on Thursday, September 8th from 6pm to 8pm?  Did you note the time and think wow something is happening here in Redding, CA?  That was the 2005/2006 incoming class of Leadership Redding.  They met for the first time during an orientation session at the City of Redding Community Room.

Their Leadership skills were immediately put to test with the wonderful “Word Matching” game, which allowed class members to learn about each other.  Each class member received a word then had to find the person with the match for their word.  The class members did well with little instruction on the “word matching game”, everyone was a “team player” with no “hot heads” in the room. After becoming acquainted,  they had to  introduce each other to the rest of the class.  This made for a great evening of developing new friendships and fun was had by all.

Orientation was also a time to hear what the upcoming year would have in store and to gain information about their Weekend Workshop in the Trinity Alps! Bears? What Bears?  Tiffany Sprenkel, Program Chairperson, offered the welcoming remarks.  Kathy Anderson, Executive Director of Shasta Regional Community Foundation, shared the relationship between Shasta Regional Community Foundation and Leadership Redding.  Dan Kupsky served as Historian and offered the Historical Perspective of Leadership Redding.  Maybe it was a typo did it read “Hysterical Perspective? Dan helped the class understand where Leadership Redding has evolved from and the vision for the future.

Jim Warnemuende and Karen Whitaker presented the Weekend Workshop overview, followed by Roxanna Bagula who spoke about the classes involvement with projects.  The evening drew to a close with Chair, Tiffany Sprenkel giving the class a challenge to enjoy the year, building friendships and learn more information to become better citizens.  Co-facilitators for this session were Peri Brustad, Marketing Chair, Connie Grinols, Curriculum Chair.

History & Culture Session

by Lenora Shealy

The first session of the year started on a brilliant fall morning in picturesque “Old Shasta”.  The session began with a continental breakfast in the historical old school house  built in the early 1920’s.

Lou Gerard, our Leadership Redding historian, took us back in time to the glory days of Shasta when it was known as “The Queen’s City”.   When Shasta was the main metropolis and Redding was known as “Poverty Flats”.  He took us through time from the gold rush days, to the beginning of the railroad in Redding, through the depression era, and on to more modern times and the continual push for economic development in the Redding region.  He and his family’s long-term commitment and contributions to the area made the history more tangible and real for the audience.

We then took a short walk to the Shasta Courthouse Museum where Al Rocca, Simpson University Professor, took us on an animated and informative walk through the creation of the Shasta Dam.  His enthusiasm and awe for the colossal engineering task was infectious.  He brought with him a slide show that depicted the process and the changes that the dam brought to the Redding Region.  He was fun and informative.

Our next speaker was Lynn Fritz, a Kurak Tribal member who discussed the Native American influences in the Redding region.  We began on the beautiful grounds of the Courthouse with a Smudging Ritual.  This traditional method of cleansing brought a sense of tranquility to the group.  Then through traditional music and a video, she tried to communicate not only the influences of her people on the local culture, but she asked us to understand the experiences of the Native Americans at the hands of those coming here during the gold rush days and how those experiences have influenced the Native American culture through the generations.  Lynn’s presentation was very thought provoking.

We were then given a tour of the Shasta Courthouse Museum by Lori Martin of the Shasta State Park.  Lori led us through the historical building discussing along the way the gold rush days, the courthouse, the jail, and even the gallows.  The museum is also the home to a wonderful art collection covering 100 years of art in Northern California.  The museum is a must see for everyone in the area.

Then it was on to a wonderful lunch at the French Gulch Hotel, where we stayed for the balance of the session.

Trent Copeland, a Leadership Redding Alum and teacher at Enterprise High School, brought some of his Mien, Lao, and Vietnamese students dressed in their native garb. They discussed their own experiences and integration into the local culture.

Our final cultural group of the day left us uplifted and smiling.  They were the Folklorico Dancers from the Anderson Teen Center.  The dancers ranged in age from 9 –15 and they enchanted us with traditional Latin costumes and dances  And just for fun, they threw in some originally choreographed modern dances.  It was a great  way to end a very pleasant and informative day.  Facilitators were Lenora Shealy, Troy Kidd, Anne Kerns and Maria Orozco-Cue.

Alumni Spotlight

A graduate of Leadership Redding class of 2005, Steve Hagenbaugh was born in Los Angeles and was raised in both Southern and Northern California.  A native Californian, Steve moved to Redding 4 years ago from Yuba City.  Just recently, as a result of a job change, Steve became a Vice-President with Premier West Bank in Redding, prior to that he had been with US Bank for four years.  For the last 30 years, Steve has been in the banking industry.

In July of 2005, Steve and Diana celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary.  They have two children, a daughter, Tami, and a son, Craig.   They also have a granddaughter age of 13 named Taylor.

In his spare time, Steve enjoys the outdoors.  Some of the activities that he enjoys are golfing, mountain biking, kayaking, and exploring Shasta County.  And in the spirit of “Tim the Tool Man Taylor”, he also has tried and completed some home improvement projects.

Steve is very active in the Redding East Rotary for which he has judged Senior Boards for Enterprise High School, served dinner for the Special Olympic Bowlers, participated in the Whiskeytown  Lake annual cleanup, assisted in construction of the new children’s’ playground in Caldwell park and is active in the Ducky Derby.

A direct result of his involvement in Leadership Redding led to the decision to become a Mentor for Plus One Mentors.  Besides his involvement with the Mentor program, Steve made some great new friends.  Leadership Redding also opened his eyes to what Shasta County and the City of Redding is about and the political arena that both operate in.  Involvement with Leadership Redding also helped to clarify the many needs that the community must address for the seniors, children, teens, and the resident homeless population.

Professionally, Leadership Redding has inspired Steve to become more involved with his community and currently he is a member of the Leadership Redding Grantmaking Committee for the McConnell Foundation Fund at the Shasta Regional Community Foundation.

As an active member of the 2005 class project, Steve believes that the future of Redding is in its youth.

Shasta Regional Community Foundation Report

by Kathy Anderson

The only thing constant in life is change.  This statement is certainly true for the Shasta Regional Community Foundation (SRCF).  In a matter of months the Community Foundation has said goodbye to an employee and board member and hello to a consultant, a new employee and two new board members.

Juliette Read is the new Program Associate as Alisa Walsh has moved on to new things in Reno, Nevada.  We Wish Alisa well! Juliette is a 2004 graduate of Simpson University and a 2005 graduate of the Great Valley Fellows Program.   She will coordinate the SRCF scholarship funds and assist with the Community Foundation’s marketing and development.

Mary D’Acquisto, the new Leadership Redding program coordinator, graduated from U.C. Berkeley and returned to Redding to work at Northern Valley Catholic Social Services.  Currently, Mary is working from home to raise her young family as she acts as consultant for Leadership Redding, the Redding Beer and Wine Festival, and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill luncheon.

As the Community Foundation said goodbye to long-term board member Susan Emmerson, we welcomed Dan Kupsky and Evelyn Jacobs to their Board.  Dan is a retired police sergeant and Leadership Redding Historian. Evelyn is also a Leadership Redding grad and the Senior Vice President and Regional President of U.S. Bank.  The Community Foundation would like to thank Susan for her years of dedication and service to the SRCF Board.

Amid the changes the Community Foundation still managed to grant out $71,700 to the community through the Redding Rancheria Community Fund and $15,125 through The McConnell Foundation Fund this quarter.  Some of the recipients of these grants include Mountain Community T.V. in Siskiyou County, the Lowden Aquatic Park Project in Weaverville and the Shasta Community Concert Association.

SRCF looks forward to more changes ahead as we prepare to move into our new building at 1335 Arboretum Drive.
